An adventure trip to the mountainous volume of South Pindos, in a hidden unknown Greece, driving in 4×4 inaccessible routes and forest roads, embracing iconic mountains and forests, where the only good they have in abundance is the wild beauty of their landscapes.
Off-road routes in the extensive mountain range of southern Pindos which is surrounded by the “giant” mountains Vardousia and Giona in the southeast, Velouchi (Timfristo) in the north and Kaliakouda in the west. Off-Road routes to the imposing forested mountains, the alpine meadows, and the fir-covered Evritania with its abundant running waters and gorges of unique beauty.
Leaving Athens, we drive on the highway for 180 km to the seaside resort of Kamena Vourla known for its thermal springs. After a short stop, we leave the beach to head west. The landscape soon changes, we are located between the mountain range of Oiti and Giona at an altitude of over 1000 m. After an intermediate stop for food, we drive next to the streams that supply the Mornos river to reach the meadows of Vardousia where we will spend the night next to Church of Prophet Elias and a spring with drinking water.
Route on Mount Vardousia. One of the few Greek mountains with an authentic alpine character that could be compared to those of central Europe. Intense and hard terrain, wild, inaccessible and steep peaks over 2000 m, and extensive alpine plateaus. The mountain is characterized by many waters and headlands. From here the Evinos river springs, many other large streams that supply it (Karyotiko, Kalogeriko etc.), as well as Mornos, which supply water to Athens.
We cross the northern complex of the mountain, which is characterized by a long ridge with smooth slopes, and in the north-northwest direction, after passing the sources of the Evinos river we end up at Grammeni Oxya. In between we stop for coffee and picnic lunch. In Grammeni Oxia the terrain changes and we drive on soft soil in the dense beech forest (with a height of over 40 m) which is hosted on the mountain’s slopes. This is the southernmost beech forest in Europe. Afterwards, we pass the alpine meadows with low vegetation, to drive to the Kokkalia ridges. Here in 279 BC. the victorious battle of the Greeks (about 30.000 soldiers) against the 200.000 Galatians, who intended to plunder the oracle of Delphi, had taken place. Our route has brought us to the area of Evritania, where we will dine and spend the night among its tall fir trees.
The area of Evritania immersed in the firs, is an ideal destination for nature lovers and 4×4. The green slopes in summer, the alpine landscape in winter, the rushing rivers, the imposing gorges, the archeological monuments, the historic monasteries, the traditional settlements and the cordial hospitality of the inhabitants, compose a magical setting that invites us to explore it. We follow a mixed route in a spruce forest on Mount Kaliakouda and walk in the impressive gorge “Panta Vrechei” – which means “always raining”. The “Panta Vrechei” gorge is a landscape of rare beauty in the narrowest points of the river Krikelopotamos. Water flows over layers of dense vegetation that covers the rocks and falls like rain on the river forming ponds. The path to the gorge is short and in extremely good condition. Before returning to the accommodation spot, we tour and get acquainted with the picturesque villages, the authentic flavors and the pure products of the area.
The 4×4 route descends to the plain of Lamia to lead to the bed of the Sperchios river. Short stop for lunch and coffee before returning to Athens via the main highway.
